Background

In 2019, the Chinese central government approved the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (hereinafter referred to as the Outline), which serves as a guide for cooperative development in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) in the present and future. The Outline highlights "Technological Bay Area," "Financial Bay Area," and "Green Bay Area" as key features of the region. Key components of the Green Bay Area include constructing ecological corridors, establishing biodiversity conservation networks, enhancing cooperation in ecological and environmental protection across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, restoring and protecting wetlands, promoting innovative green and low-carbon development models, and encouraging green lifestyle initiatives.

Urban Biodiversity Conservation

This initiative explores new urban park management models aligned with China’s current urban biodiversity conservation goals through public engagement in ecological park management. It aims to influence and promote conservation activities in other parts of the Greater Bay Area, such as creating waterbird habitats, controlling invasive plant species, conducting ecological monitoring, and building biodiversity-friendly facilities. Based in Shenzhen with a global outlook, the project provides fresh perspectives and insights into urban biodiversity conservation and management.

Bay Area Wetland Education

To foster public awareness and emotional connection to wetlands in the Bay Area and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the project leads efforts to engage the public in wetland conservation. Collaborating with various organizations, it operates nature education centers and schools. Tailored to the unique natural and cultural attributes of different locations, the project has developed and continuously upgraded a curriculum catering to diverse audiences.

Conservation Collaboration Network

The initiative drives the establishment of regional collaboration networks to promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS), enhance biodiversity in the Greater Bay Area, and implement innovative green finance mechanisms to achieve ecological and carbon neutrality goals. It also fosters the creation of diverse collaborative platforms to encourage broad participation from governments, businesses, and the public, collectively contributing to the development of a world-class Bay Area.
